Buddha
Buddha (meaning 'to understand or be awakened') is a term in Buddhist religion to denote a person who has reached enlightenment and therefore attained nirvana. Particularly used to refer to the first person, Siddartha Gautama, to reach enlightenment.
Buddhists believe that in the future another master, Maitreya Buddha, will be revealed who will lead all living beings to enlightenment. Buddha statues or pictures are always present in Buddhist temples as a focus of teaching and contemplation, and depicted on mandalas and other religious artwork.
In feng shui, a statue of Mi La Foh, the 'Laughing Buddha', is considered to bring good luck and wealth, so is often placed in an auspicious corner of a home or business.
